Dr. Willis Akhwale.

Dr. Willis Akhwale holds degree in Medicine from the University of Nairobi, College of Health Sciences and a PhD in Tropical Medicine from Tokyo Women’s Medical University in Japan. Dr. Akhwale has both management and technical expertise in the provision of healthcare services with 25 years of progressive experience in senior technical management and leadership in the health sector.  Within the Kenya Ministry of Health (MOH), he was responsible for managing a US$16 million PEPFAR supported HIV/AIDS control programme, he supervised HIV, TB and Malaria control programs and was also responsible for the management of Global Fund and World Bank grants. He has more than 20 years of global health experience in tropical medicine with interests in infectious disease control, program and project evaluation, health informatics, health systems strengthening, and epidemiology. He coordinated the Kenya AIDS Indicator Survey study group in 2013 and his work in the area of malaria control in Kenya has received the recognition of the Kenyan President. Dr. Akhwale joined the International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) of the University of Washington in June 2014 as the Country Director for Kenya. In this role he has been involved in project monitoring, evaluations, and research programs.  Dr. Akhwale is a visionary, results oriented strategic thinker with excellent organizational management, interpersonal and communication skills. Dr. Akhwale has authored over 20 publications, including 18 peer reviewed manuscripts and one journal supplement. He currently also serves as an independent consultant in the health sector and he is a recipient of Charles C. Shephard Science Award for his excellent contribution to science.
