University of Nairobi, College of Health Sciences (CHS) held the second five (5) day training workshop in Critical Appraisal of Research Proposals (CARP) from 20th to 24th July, 2015 at Silver Springs Hotel, Nairobi, Kenya. There were 33 participants distributed as follows; Ethic Review Members drawn from all the 22 (twenty two) accredited Ethics Review Committees in Kenya, top Institutional Administrators, Researchers, Research Administrators and Students.

College of Health Sciences was supported by National Commission for Science Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) and Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). The workshop was opened by the Director, School of Dental Sciences Prof. Loice Gathece on behalf of Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage, the Principal, College of Health Sciences, UoN.

The CARP Training goals are:

  • To build capacity of Institutional Ethics and Research Committee Members to critically appraise qualitative and quantitative research proposals with an aim of impacting positively on the quality of review of research proposals and by extension quality of research findings
  • To build capacity of ERC Members and therefore reduce delays in the review process
  • To build a sustainable research enterprise to enhance socio-economic development through innovations for better health outcomes
  • To enhance collaboration and partnerships among local and international ERCs.
  • To develop a partnership/collaborative strategy between human and animal ethics review committees.

At the end of the training workshop, all participants felt that the course is most appropriate for building the needed capacity for Ethics Review Members in the country but also relevant for the faculty. Further as a follow up to what was agreed during the June 2014 CARP training, participants suggested contact persons in their respective institutions to support a national evaluation of Ethics Review Committee's Ecosystem. The latter will be used as a platform on which to address Ethics Review Committees operational and performance gaps in a more wholistic manner.
