The College of Health Sciences of the University of Nairobi is the leading tertiary healthcare training centre in Kenya.  The College was created in 1985 and had its origin in the Faculty of Medicine which was established in 1967. It currently comprises of five Schools, namely the Schools of: Medicine (1967), Pharmacy (1995), Dental Sciences (1995), Nursing Sciences (2004) and Public Health (2010); and one institute, University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID) (2003)  and the Centre for HIV Prevention and  Research  (CHIVPR)  (2006).

The College has 21 teaching departments and 11 thematic units.  The College also has state of the art teaching and research facilities including the Nairobi Surgical Skills Centre and Multipurpose Skills laboratory.


The College operates with its vision as an international centre of choice for training of high caliber healthcare professionals for innovative research and provision of quality healthcare in a safe environment.  


The University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious disease, (UNITID) is the third facility of its kind in Africa that undertakes research and training geared towards management and control of infectious diseases.  It had an ultramodern Level 3 Laboratory supporting research into emerging and re-emerging pathogens especially the viral haemorrhagic fevers. The Kenya Aids Vaccine Initiative (KAVI), currently hosts one of the only three vaccine research laboratories in Africa and is the first site for phade 1 and 2 HIV and AIDS vaccine trials in Africa.


Staff at the College offer specialised services at Kenyatta National Hospital, Mathari Hospital, as well as at the University of Nairobi Dental Hospital.  College staff also provide exemplary service to community through drop-in centres, community outreach programmes and medical camps held throughout the Republic of Kenya.


The governance of the College comprises of College Management Board, College Academic Board, School Boards down to individual departments.  The above organs incorporate students and other stakeholders.
