The University of Nairobi (UoN) and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) recently partnered to respond to the CDC funding opportunity titled, “Supporting Counties and other indigenous Health Management Institutions to bridge skill gaps among health care workforce necessary for HIV Epidemic Control in Kenya under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).” The proposed goal of the joint application is to build the capacity of County Health Departments (CHDs) to manage HIV programs by strengthening institutional systems and enhancing the capacity of Human Resources for Health.

During a meeting held at the College, Prof. George Rutherford, a professor at UCSF Global Health Sciences and Prof. James Machoki M’Imunya, the Ag. Principal, CHS, agreed that the partnership between the two institutions is solid and is working well and the team is hopeful that their current proposal to the NOFO will be awarded. In addition, the two institutions already have a collaborative training agreement in place.

On his part Prof. Machoki said that UoN is welcome to having more global partners as the institution is ready for diversification. He reiterated the fact that UoN Leadership is interested in the outcome of the collaborations and not just in signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and also gave his assurance that UoN will do part of their bargain beyond expectations.

Prof. Rutherford of UCSF lauded the two teams’ for their efforts towards writing the grant and exuded his confidence that the grant will be won by the University of Nairobi. He also stated that UCSF has lots of experience partnering with other institutions in Africa and is looking forward to expanded presence in Kenya through UoN. Both teams appreciated the partnership and look forward to strengthening it, growing it and celebrating successes and lessons learnt.
