College of Health Sciences Principal, Prof. James Machoki holds a consultative meeting with officials from FHI 360.

The Principal, College of Health Sciences Prof. James Machoki M'Imunya held a consultative meeting with Prof. Otto Nzapfurundi Chabikuli and Dr. Peter Mwarogo from FHI 360 who paid him a courtesy call in his office on March 18th, 2019. Prof Chabikuli is the Director, Global Health, Population and Nutrition while Dr. Mwarogo is the Country Director for FHI 360 in Kenya.

During the meeting, Prof. Machoki highlighted the critical role that collaborations play with respect to improving academic delivery and more importantly research output. He pointed out the need for collaborating partners to engage in a relationship that not only leads to mutual benefits to the institutions involved but also benefits the communities in which the institutions operate. He lamented that some North-South collaborations had not led to sustainable investments in African institutions despite the activities being carried out in Africa. He emphasized on the need to have respectful, faithful and productive collaborations which lead to sustainable interventions which last beyond the collaboration period.

While echoing the sentiments of Prof. Machoki, Prof Chabikuli gave examples of his own personal experiences while working in and out of Africa. He indicated that FHI 360 has had many collaborations across the world. FHI 360 partners with governments, the private sector and civil society to bring about positive social change and to provide lifesaving health care, quality education and opportunities for meaningful economic participation. They do this by using research and evidence to design and deliver innovative programs that change behaviors, increase access to services and improve lives.

It was noted in the meeting that the two institutions had already started working together through the University of Nairobi Office of Research and Grants Advancement and Support (ORGAS). A joint grant application had already been submitted in January 2019 and there was great this grant application would receive funding. It was agreed that the two institutions needed to formalize and expand collaboration. The Director, University of Nairobi Institute of Tropical and Infectious Diseases (UNITID) Dr. Dufton Mwaengo expressed great interest in collaborating with FHI 360 while taking advantage of the Level III laboratories at UNITID.

To facilitate this process, UoN would share a template of the master MoU for input by FHI 360. UoN's ORGAS would work with FHI 360 team to ensure the MoU is processed as soon as possible.
